|Select questions from our interview with captain Freja Eriksen:
Talk us through the selection process for your team..
Living in a cold country first tryout was held indoor mid-February 2013. Ending up with 15 players stating interest, motivation and will to continue, we decided to move along with these 15 players. We feel very fortunate to have Efe De-Eme as our coach. Thanks to him we started a progressive sprint programme around April 1!
2nd tryout/practice was held Mid-April on the beach!! We got VERY cold feet, but the two days on the beach showed high motivation, and we got to know each other a lot better on the two lines.
Since the first tryout we had one player leaving the team. This brought us down to 14 players, and a team consisting of a good mixture of experienced and newer players - especially when it comes to beach ultimate. The team is fast and has a good combination of handlers and cutters.
When we later faced the opportunity for adding to the team an experienced handler that already knew many of the other players, we decided to do so. This brought us back to 15 players, and we're as close as possible to have the strongest women's team you can put together in Danish ultimate while allowing space for some shooting stars.
How has your team's season gone so far? What tournaments have you played?
The team has definitely grown stronger and faster during the season. Dedication to the sprint programme, a lot of throwing, and practice together has raised the level of all players individually and as a team. This was tested at BUM (Berlin Ultimate Mitte, May 2013), where we came out 3rd, only defeated by the French and the Finnish national teams. Against France we had a very close game that could have gone both waysf, which was a successfull experience. The most important lesson from BUM was that the team showed strong fighter spirit, regardless of the score. We will definitely take this with us to the ECBU 2013.
Which teams are you looking forward to playing against the most in Spain and why?
We are very much looking forward to meeting the French team again - we're eager to play that rematch of course :-). Apart from this we're excited to meet Great Britain against whom we expect a great match. We expect to learn something from this match which we're going to play early in the tournament, and we're confident that we can put up a fight showing them what vikings are made of, even though we know it's gonna be though, and we'll have to play it safe and come out strong on the D. And then of course we will enjoy meeting teams that we don't normally get to play against!|
